Dr. Chase Billingham, associate professor and graduate program coordinator in the Department of Sociology in the Fairmount College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, recently published the article, “‘Kansas Women Are Awake’: Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s Journeys in Kansas and the Origins of Women and Economics” in the journal, Great Plains Quarterly.

The article, published Nov. 5, detailed Dr. Billingham’s research on Charlotte Perkins Gilman, author of 1898’s influential “Women and Economics,” and the work she did in Kansas that led to her to publish her landmark book. Dr. Billingham’s research spans Gilman’s journey in Kansas in 1896 and 1897 by analyzing her letters, diaries and other archives to provide a detailed account of her ties to Kansas for the first time.

Support for teaching and research is critical to Wichita State University’s mission to be an essential educational, cultural and economic driver for Kansas and the greater public good. The establishment of an office dedicated to retaining, supporting and developing faculty talent is a significant step toward that.

The Office for Faculty Advancement, Retention and Excellence (FARE), funded in part by a $1 million grant from the National Science Foundation, is opening this semester. Its goals include supporting student success, collaborative and externally funded research, and attracting and retaining a diverse faculty body. Success in meeting these goals will elevate Wichita State’s efforts to become an R1 research institution.

The FARE office will collaborate with several departments across campus to deliver programs and services to support faculty, including Office of the Provost, College of Applied Studies, Office of Instructional Resources, Media Resources Center, Office of Hispanic Serving Initiatives and Office of Research.

Wichita State University students work at desktop computers in NIAR's Aircraft Structural Test & Evaluation Center.

Do you have students who are looking for applied learning opportunities? The National Institute for Aviation Research (NIAR) is looking for students to support digital twin programs — which includes fully disassembling vehicles; scanning individual structural parts down to the nuts and bolts; and reassembling the virtual aircraft parts to create a digital twin.

Applied learning opportunities include on-campus and off-campus undergraduate and graduate mechanical computer-aided design, systems engineering and reverse engineering positions for U.S. citizens and qualified foreign nationals. These positions are open to all majors with opportunity for advancement based on performance and budget.

Students can find opportunities through WSU’s internal job listings, which also includes various other positions available at NIAR and the National Institute for Research and Digital Transformation. For additional information, contact Michael Henderson at michael.henderson@idp.wichita.edu.

Paige Youngdahl

Meet Paige Youngdahl, a senior at Wichita State majoring in information technology and management information systems. This past summer, Paige advanced her skills as a data analyst intern at Koch Industries.

Reflecting on the experience, Paige says her favorite part has been connecting classroom concepts to real-world applications. “I can’t explain how many things clicked that I didn’t fully understand from my classes. I have learned so much and have met so many amazing people.” Paige encourages other students to pursue internships, saying, “For me, it was like two puzzle pieces were coming together. I’m currently learning the textbook knowledge I need, while also seeing how this knowledge is used in a business.”

Student Conduct & Community Standards (SCCS) is wanting to share a helpful resource regarding student classroom behavior with faculty and staff on campus. This guide, which can be found on the SCCS website, discusses three easy steps to better manage classroom behavior:

  1. Establish high and positive behavioral expectations
  2. Reiterate/adjust and communicate those high and positive expectations
  3. Outline next steps and document the disruption

If you are ever unsure about whether to make a report something to the SCCS office or not, you can email SCCS@wichita.edu or call at 316-978-6681. If you believe a report needs to be made to SCCS, you can fill out the conduct incident response form at wichita.edu/reportit.
