Join Interstellar Seminar from 2:30 to 3:20 p.m. Wednesday, May 1 in 104 Jabara Hall or online for the last session of the semester and see how science fiction is useful in crewed interstellar missions.

When looking towards interstellar travel in the distant future, science may not be ready to provide a clear vision. Science fiction can go outside the box and into the realm of what can only be imagined. Dr. Rachelle Smith — former professor of English, modern languages and journalism at Emporia State University, who specializes in science fiction — will provide insights into how science fiction can lead people into a science future that will rely on creativity before technology.

Zoom details and an archive of previous seminars can be found on the Wichita Space Initiative website.

This project, “Adelante Juntos – Forward Together: The Duerksen Amphitheater Mural Project” is in conjuction with the exhibition Urban Canvas: Exploring Muralism in Wichita, on view through June 8 in the Beren Gallery.

Nathalia Gallego Sanchez, known as GLeo, is a Colombian street artist and muralist who was engaged by the Horizontes Project in 2018 to work with Wichita photographers of color to design, and then executed the painting of “El Sueño Original, (The Original Dream).” At the time of its creation, the work was recognized as the world’s largest mural painted by a single artist. The mural used more than 650 gallons of acrylic paint to cover 50,000 square feet of “canvas,” spanning the 17 bins of the east side of the grain elevator located at 519 E. 20th St. N. in Wichita.

“Adelante Juntos – Forward Together: The Duerksen Amphitheater Mural Project” is directed by the Ulrich Museum of Art and Armando Minjárez with support from Wichita State University’s Office of Hispanic Initiatives, Student Government Association, Hispanic American Leadership Organization (HALO), University Libraries, Special Collections and University Archives, the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, the Office of the President and the Office of Strategic Communications and Marketing.
