TRIO Disability Support Services (DSS) is a federally funded program that supports 115 undergrad students with disabilities outside of their classrooms through specialized advising, free individual tutoring, a textbook lending library, study skills workshops and more.

Its academic advisors specialize in supporting students with disabilities and offer a “design it yourself” approach to advising – whether it be academic, career or personal. One of its favorite things to talk with students about is scholarships – the ones DSS offers to students enrolled in its program and the ones open to everybody. Since August 2023, its students have collectively been awarded over $27,000 in scholarships.

DSS offers free individual tutoring and takes great care in pairing students with tutors based on a variety of things, like personality, availability, learning needs and knowledge level. Tutoring is held in-person (on campus only) or virtually. DSS is accepting new students but space is limited.

Students interested in learning more about how TRIO DSS can support them can email trio.dss@wichita.edu. Students who are ready to apply can download the application, complete it and email it to trio.dss@wichita.edu or visit the Shocker Success Center, room 223.

WSU is starting a group aural wellness program for seniors. The program consists of eight, two-hour weekly sessions during the fall and spring semesters. These sessions will include information about hearing, hearing aids, communication strategies and have speakers from the community discuss their experiences. It is looking for six individuals and their communication partners (spouse, friend, family member) to enroll. Throughout the program, participants will complete several surveys and have their hearing aids tested.

Those interested in the study or have questions can contact Dr. Katharine Fitzharris (katharine.fitzharris@wichita.edu) or Dr. Cynthia Richburg (cynthia.richburg@wichita.edu).

There is no cost for this program, and no compensation will be provided for this study.

WSU is starting an aural rehabilitation group for seniors who are new to hearing aid use. The program needs students to help run the eight-week program and assist participants. The sessions are two hours each week, and there would be up to two hours of pre-session meeting time for preparation and instructions. You will help run the program, as well as participating in the study. You’ll be asked to complete surveys regarding your experience in the group, the impact this experience has had on you and your experience working with this population. There is no compensation for your time, but participation could look great on a resume.

If you are interested in the study or have questions, contact Dr. Katharine Fitzharris (katharine.fitzharris@wichita.edu) or Dr. Cynthia Richburg (cynthia.richburg@wichita.edu).
