TRIO DSS helps Shockers with disabilities thrive

TRIO Disability Support Services (DSS) is a federally funded program that supports 115 undergrad students with disabilities outside of their classrooms through specialized advising, free individual tutoring, a textbook lending library, study skills workshops and more.

Its academic advisors specialize in supporting students with disabilities and offer a “design it yourself” approach to advising – whether it be academic, career or personal. One of its favorite things to talk with students about is scholarships – the ones DSS offers to students enrolled in its program and the ones open to everybody. Since August 2023, its students have collectively been awarded over $27,000 in scholarships.

DSS offers free individual tutoring and takes great care in pairing students with tutors based on a variety of things, like personality, availability, learning needs and knowledge level. Tutoring is held in-person (on campus only) or virtually. DSS is accepting new students but space is limited.

Students interested in learning more about how TRIO DSS can support them can email trio.dss@wichita.edu. Students who are ready to apply can download the application, complete it and email it to trio.dss@wichita.edu or visit the Shocker Success Center, room 223.
